Epic CEO has ambitions to rival Google and Facebook in the future

Fortnite's global popularity has taken its developer Epic Games to the next level, even allowing it to open its own distribution store to rival the likes of Steam and GOG. But Epic CEO Tim Sweeney recently said that even though we have the engine and Epic store business, we're not yet a "big one" yet, and we really want to be a global developer supplier. Expect to grow into the top tech companies in the industry in the future, such as Google and Facebook.

In an interview with Variety, Sweeney said Fortnite's popularity has led to changes across the gaming industry, likening the game to a social network where players gather together to socialize while playing.

Epic recently received a $1.25 billion investment from six companies, and with Fortnite and unreal engine's steady stream of revenue, we decided it was time to compare Epic to Google and Facebook. Even though we have our own game engine and Epic game store business, it's still not as big as Google or Facebook. We really aspire to be a global player at that level.

They're clearly confident: "when we consider Fortnite's impact in relation to the other work at hand, it's a convenient advantage." With the success of its games, the opening of its own mall and the competitive power of unreal engine in its hands, Epic has a good hand to play. To achieve that goal, Sweeney says Epic plans to devote significant resources to expanding the unreal engine team, which has been installed more than 7.5 million times and is often used for games, special effects or design. "And plans to" launch some experimental entertainment projects."
