The Infectious Inspection quest is given by a mysterious alchemist NPC who's obsessed with studying disease and decay. It's not just about survival, it's about harvesting the materials and essence of the undead to aid in dark research.
Preparing for the Quest
Before stepping into the Crypt, make sure you're ready for a long grind. This quest requires 50 total kills and 20 scavenged materials, so you'll likely need to run the dungeon several times. Preparation is key.
Recommended Loadout:
Weapons: Choose fast-cleaving or wide-arc weapons such as axes, flails, or greatswords for crowd control. If you're a spellcaster, area-of-effect (AoE) spells like Fireball or Chain Lightning are excellent for thinning out hordes of zombies.
Armor: Prioritize Dark and Darker Items with poison or disease resistance, as undead enemies tend to inflict damage-over-time effects. Epic or rare armor pieces that grant stamina recovery are also highly recommended.
Consumables: Bring healing potions, bandages, and at least one antidote flask. Even though the Crypt's infection mechanic isn't fatal by itself, stacking poison or bleed effects can quickly drain your health.
Lastly, ensure you have enough Dark and Darker Gold to restock supplies between runs. You'll likely go through several sets of consumables before completing the quest.
Step 1: Collecting Infected Flesh
The first objective requires gathering 10 pieces of Infected Flesh of any rarity. These items drop primarily from Zombies within the Crypt dungeon. Zombies are slow-moving, but they hit hard up close and can swarm you quickly if ignored.
Tips:
Target Zombie clusters found near the lower crypt halls or in the flooded chambers.
Use ranged attacks or spells to thin them out before engaging in melee.
If possible, group with teammates to split the grind. Each party member's kill has a chance to drop Infected Flesh, making collection faster.
Infected Flesh is a common drop, but you'll need patience to gather the full 10. If your inventory fills up quickly, stash the excess in your camp chest between runs.
Step 2: Fetching Old Bloody Bandages
The second item on your list, Old Bloody Bandages, drops primarily from Mummies. These undead foes are more dangerous than Zombies, as they can apply stacking bleed effects and occasionally summon insects or plague swarms when damaged.
Tips:
Find Mummies in sarcophagus-lined rooms or burial wings deeper in the Crypt.
Keep moving to avoid their slow but deadly melee swings.
Fire and Holy-type weapons deal bonus damage against them.
Mummies drop Old Bloody Bandages at a moderate rate, but RNG can be unpredictable. Expect to make multiple runs before completing this objective. Loot every corpse carefully; the bandages are small and easy to overlook.
Step 3: Slay 25 Zombies
You'll naturally complete this objective while farming for Infected Flesh. Still, keep track of your kill count to avoid overcommitting. Zombies appear in nearly every section of the Crypt, especially in open corridors and dungeon intersections.
Combat Strategy:
Stay mobile, Zombies are weak but dangerous in groups.
Use wide-sweeping attacks or AoE magic to manage crowds.
Save stamina for dodging; getting cornered can be fatal.
Zombies also have a small chance to drop rare consumables or crafting components. Don't ignore the loot, they can sometimes yield low-tier Dark and Darker Items worth selling for Dark and Darker Gold.
Step 4: Slay 25 Mummies
Killing 25 Mummies is arguably the toughest part of the quest due to their durability and status effects. They often appear in smaller groups but take longer to kill.
Combat Strategy:
Focus fire, don't let multiple Mummies stack their bleed effects.
Use Fire-based weapons or enchanted projectiles to deal sustained damage.
If your class can heal, keep regeneration spells active to counteract bleeding.
If you're partied up, assign one player to kite while the others attack from range. This keeps the fight manageable and reduces the risk of getting surrounded.
Step 5: Turning in the Quest
Once you've gathered 10 Infected Flesh, 10 Old Bloody Bandages, and killed 25 Zombies and 25 Mummies, return to the quest giver in the safe zone. Turning in the materials triggers a short dialogue sequence where the alchemist thanks you for advancing their infection studies.
Pro Tips for Efficiency
Run the dungeon on Normal mode first to get used to the enemy spawns before attempting harder tiers.
Bring a torch or lantern, the Crypt is notoriously dark, and missing loot piles can cost you valuable quest progress.
Play with a group for faster farming. Party members' kills often count toward your objectives.
Sell unwanted Epic Weapons for extra Dark and Darker Gold if they don't fit your build.
Final Thoughts
The Infectious Inspection Quest is one of the most rewarding grind-based missions in Dark and Darker. It tests your endurance, combat skill, and resource management, but the payoff is worth it. The Dark and Darker Gold you earn lets you gear up for more dangerous expeditions, while the Dark and Darker Items boost your power and survivability for future challenges.
With persistence and preparation, you'll cleanse the Crypt of its undead menace, and come out richer, stronger, and ready for whatever horrors await next.
