OSRS Ranged Gear Guide: Best Upgrade Path for Every Stage
Ranged combat in Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is one of the most powerful and versatile playstyles—but also one of the most confusing. With countless weapon types, armor sets, and situational upgrades, it’s easy to waste millions of OSRS GP on gear that looks impressive but delivers little real value. This guide focuses on efficient, practical progression—helping you spend wisely and upgrade at the right time without regret.
Starting Strong in Free-to-Play
Every ranged journey begins somewhere, and for many players, that’s in free-to-play. Fortunately, the early game offers a solid foundation that prepares you well for members' content.
At level 40 Ranged, equip green dragonhide armor, including the body, chaps, and vambraces. Pair this with a coif, a maple shortbow, and adamant arrows. Add an amulet of power for a small but helpful stat boost. This setup is extremely affordable and more than capable of carrying you through early training.
If you’re playing a low-defense account, you can swap the dragonhide body for a standard leather body, which requires only level 1 Defense. Either way, this setup gives you a strong starting point with minimal investment.
Your First Priority as a Member
Once you upgrade to members, your first major goal should be unlocking Ava’s devices. Completing the Animal Magnetism quest rewards you with either Ava’s attractor or accumulator, depending on your Ranged level.
These cape-slot items automatically retrieve a large portion of your ammunition—up to 72% with the accumulator. Over time, this saves a massive amount of money and significantly improves training efficiency. It’s one of the most important early upgrades and should be treated as essential.
Early Member Upgrades
With membership unlocked, you gain access to a range of inexpensive but impactful upgrades.
At level 50 Ranged, switch to blue dragonhide armor for improved accuracy. Upgrade your weapon to a magic shortbow, which offers better accuracy and a useful special attack. Imbuing it with a scroll further enhances its performance, reducing special attack cost and allowing the use of stronger arrows.
Replace your amulet of power with an amulet of glory for better stats and convenient teleport options. Add snakeskin boots and a bandana for small bonuses that still make a difference.
For your shield slot, consider the Book of Law. When filled with Armadyl pages, it provides ranged accuracy and prayer bonuses, making it especially useful when using crossbows.
Understanding Weapon Paths
As you progress, ranged combat splits into two main weapon categories.
Fast weapons—such as shortbows and blowpipes—excel in close-range combat and serious damage per second (DPS). These are ideal for general training and low-defense enemies.
On the other hand, crossbows and heavier ranged weapons trade speed for power. They allow the use of shields and specialized bolts, making them highly effective against tougher enemies and bosses.
A rune crossbow is your first major step into this category. Pair it with enchanted ruby bolts to deal percentage-based damage, which is extremely powerful against high-health targets.
Mid-Game Gear and Smart Investments
As your bank grows, so should your gear. At level 60, upgrade to red dragonhide, and at 70, move to black dragonhide for consistent accuracy improvements.
One often-overlooked upgrade is blessed dragonhide armor. While it offers the same offensive bonuses as black dragonhide, it adds defensive stats and prayer bonuses. This makes it excellent for longer bossing or Slayer trips.
The dragon crossbow is another key upgrade. While its base stats aren’t dramatically better than the rune version, it unlocks dragon bolts, which significantly increase your damage potential—especially when using enchanted variants.
Completing Recipe for Disaster for Barrows gloves is also highly recommended. These gloves provide strong bonuses across all combat styles, making them incredibly versatile.
Entering the High-Tier Meta
Once you reach higher levels and have more GP to spend, your upgrades become more impactful—and more expensive.
The toxic blowpipe is one of the most important ranged weapons in the game. Its extremely fast attack speed makes it devastating against low-defense enemies. While it’s costly to maintain, the damage output more than justifies the expense.
The necklace of anguish is your first best-in-slot item for ranged. It provides both accuracy and strength bonuses, directly increasing your maximum hit. This makes it one of the most valuable upgrades available.
If you’re training Slayer, the imbued Slayer helmet is essential. It offers massive accuracy and damage boosts against assigned tasks, outperforming nearly every other helmet option.
Specialized Weapons and Bossing Power
As you approach endgame content, certain weapons become highly valuable for specific situations.
The Dragon Hunter crossbow is incredibly effective against dragons, offering massive accuracy and damage boosts. If you’re farming bosses like Vorkath, this weapon should be a top priority.
For shield upgrades, the twisted buckler provides excellent ranged strength and accuracy. Until you can afford it, the Odium Ward is a solid alternative.
Some upgrades, like the Armadyl crossbow, are often skippable due to their high cost relative to their performance. Saving for more impactful upgrades is usually the smarter choice.
Endgame Gear and Final Upgrades
At the highest levels, ranged gear becomes extremely powerful—and extremely expensive.
The Bow of Faerdhinen (Bowfa), combined with crystal armor, offers exceptional damage and versatility. It rivals some of the best weapons in the game while being far more affordable than top-tier alternatives.
Masori armor represents the pinnacle of ranged DPS gear, offering unmatched accuracy and strength bonuses. Fortified versions provide even better defense and prayer bonuses but come at a steep cost.
Zaryte vambraces are the best-in-slot gloves for ranged, adding both accuracy and strength. Meanwhile, Pegasian boots offer only minimal improvements and should be one of your last upgrades due to poor value.
The Zaryte crossbow is a powerful endgame weapon that enhances bolt effects, making it ideal for high-level bossing.
Final Thoughts
Ranged progression in OSRS doesn’t have to be overwhelming or wasteful. By focusing on efficient upgrades and understanding when each item truly adds value, you can maximize your performance without draining your bank. Having plenty of OSRS gold can also be of great help to you.
Take your time, prioritize meaningful upgrades, and avoid unnecessary purchases. With the right approach, ranged becomes not only one of the strongest combat styles but also one of the most rewarding.
